Royal British Legion launches 2015 Poppy Appeal

The Royal British Legion launches its annual Poppy Appeal today, almost a century on from when it first began.

Inspired by John McCrae's 1915 poem ‘In Flanders' Field’, an American War Secretary, Moina Michael, bought poppies to sell to her friends to raise money for Servicemen in need after the First World War.

A century on from the start of that conflict, money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to providing care to anyone who has previously served or currently serves in the British Armed Forces and their families.

This could include supporting:

  • Bereaved families to cope after the loss of a loved one.

  • Those leaving the Forces into work and housing.

  • Older veterans to get the care and support they need and deserve.
