Steel firm Caparo Industries goes into administration

Steel firm Caparo has announced it's gone into administration with the loss of around 1,800 UK jobs.

The steel manufacture has plants in Wrexham and Tredegar.

Caparo - which has 20 sites across England and Wales - has around 105 workers at its two Welsh plants in Wrexham and Tredegar.

Caparo Wire on the Wrexham Industrial Estate employs around 85 people.

Caparo Tubes on the Tafarnaubach Industrial Estate, in Tredegar has about 30 workers.

Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) have been appointed as administrators.

Caparo has been hit by the collapse in the market price of steel and the strength of the pound against the Euro, which has made imports more expensive.

Angela Eagle, shadow business secretary said: "This is a further blow to the steel industry which is now on its knees, and my thoughts are with the employees of Caparo who are facing uncertainty over their future.

"With the Chinese president in the UK this week, I hope the Government will raise the issue of anti-competitive dumping which is driving down steel prices."
