Countdown begins to ban on smoking in cars with children

A publicity campaign to mark the countdown to a ban on smoking in cars carrying children starts today.

The campaign will include outdoor and radio advertisements to highlight that smoking in private vehicles when someone under the age of 18 is present will be illegal from October 1.

Confused about how the ban will work? Here are a few things you need to know:

  • A private vehicle must be smoke-free if it's enclosed; there is more than one person present and one of them is under the age of 18.

  • It will be an offence for a driver, including a provisional driver, not to stop someone smoking if someone under the age of 18 is present.

  • The rules don't apply to e-cigarettes.

  • The law doesn't apply when someone under the age of 18 is smoking and is the only person in the vehicle.

  • Police and local authorities will enforce the regulations.

  • The regulations introduce a fixed penalty notice of £50 for each offence.
