Meteor shower set to dazzle Welsh skies

It may well be a case of weather stops play, but fingers crossed some parts of Wales could be in for one heck of a light show tonight!

People across Wales can expect fantastic views of the Perseid meteor shower tonight, as the annual occurrence reaches its peak.

The question is, what on earth is going on up there? I've been to meet Dr Edward Gomez, a leading astronomer based at Cardiff University to find out more!

So, here comes the science bit!

The Perseid meteors are visible every year, when Earth passes through the debris cloud of the comet Swift-Tuttle. The meteors collide with our atmosphere, causing bright flashes of light.

Experts suggest the best views are to be had by looking into the north part of the sky, and finding a viewing spot away from city or street lights. As many as 100 meteors an hour may be seen in a dark sky.

If you miss the show tonight, fear not..... You have until the 24th August to catch it.
