Spaniel survives 600ft drop from mountain summit
Woody the spaniel was stretchered to safety after falling 200 metres from the summit of Pen Y Fan in the Brecon Beacons.
Brecon Mountain Rescue Team were contacted by Dyfed Powys Police on Saturday, alerting them to the fact that the nine-year-old spaniel had fallen 600ft from the summit, and members of the public were putting themselves at risk trying to assist the animal.
A team of eight rescuers were tasked to the scene, allowing members of the public to retreat to safer ground.
A team of eight rescued Woody from the mountainside, treating him for suspected spinal and internal injuries before stretchering him off the hill, where he was transported to Honddu Veterinary Centre in Brecon.
After X-rays and assessment by a vet, Woody was declared to have nothing wrong other than a broken tail and some cuts and bruises, despite having fallen 600ft after jumping after a rock thrown off the Northeast face by a member of the public.
Mountain rescuers have asked people to be aware that throwing rocks from summits is obviously very dangerous, not only for eager Springer Spaniels, but for humans walking below.
