Lee Selby has become Wales' 12th boxing world champion after a superb performance in victory over IBF featherweight holder Evgeny Gradovich.

The 28-year-old from Barry outclassed the Russian, before the fight was halted in the eighth round at the O2 Arena in London.

The fight went to a technical decision, because Gradovich had a bad cut near his eye, caused by an accidental clash of heads.

The judges awarded Selby the fight, unanimously and comfortably, with 79-73, 80-72, 79-73 on their scorecards.

Gradovich had won the IBF World Featherweight title two years ago, and had defended it four times.

Selby was on top in the early rounds, with sharp jabs, and then more variety to his shots.

Gradovich grew into the fight, with occasional power shots, but was hit on the counter by a beautiful punch from Selby.

After the head clash, the Welshman delivered another counter left hook, and consistent jabs, opened up Gradovich's cut further, causing the referee and ringside doctor to stop the fight.

Former British, European and Commonwealth champion Selby now has 21 wins and one defeat.
