Anniversary of Cambrian Colliery disaster approaches

This Sunday will mark the 50th anniversary of the Cambrian Colliery disaster in Clydach Vale, where 31 men were killed in the last deep coal mining disaster in South Wales.

The explosion made international news with TV cameras capturing the moments as friends and family members waited for updates.

Despite the trauma of losing fellow mining colleagues, many men returned to the pit after the disaster once the area re-opened.

A memorial was opened on the site in the early 1990's and remembrance services have been held there ever since.

But with the older generation beginning to dwindle, steps have been made to educate youngsters about the events surrounding the disaster and mining heritage as a whole.
