'We hope Amelia will never be forgotten' - say her parents following murder trial
The parents of Amelia Rose, who died aged five-weeks-old at the hands of her grandad Mark Jones, say the last two years have been long and traumatic.
In a statement following the trial they said:
Sentencing Mark Jones for his granddaughter's murder, judge Mr Justice Wyn Williams said that he had shown "not a shred of remorse. Your sole aim has been to avoid responsibility for what you have done."
He said Jones had inflicted "significant and serious violence" to a "particularly vulnerable and defenceless" victim. The judge said Jones had been "increasingly desperate" in his attempts to avoid responsibility.
He will serve a 25-year minimum term for murder, with four years concurrent for perverting the course of justice, in trying to blame Amelia's death on a visitor.
Mr Justice Wyn Williams said Jones should only then be released if it is considered he is no longer a risk to young children, or the public at large. "You may well never be released from prison - of only when you are a very old man."
