A man has appeared in court after a woman died as the result of a dog attack at Crossways Road in the Ely area of Cardiff.

Craig Greve from Ely - the 23-year-old grandson of Rhona Greve - pleaded not guilty to two offences under the Dangerous Dogs Act at Cardiff Magistrates.

He was remanded in custody to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on April 7th.

His lawyer Trudy McBride said, "This is an extremely tragic case. He is the grandson of the deceased. He saw what happened and was with her when she passed away."

Police were called to the house in the Ely area of Cardiff on Friday night after the 64-year-old woman suffered serious injuries when she was attacked by a dog.

Despite attempts by officers and paramedics to save her, the grandmother later died at the University Hospital of Wales.

Neighbours said there had been a dog at the house "for years" - and Rhona loved children and animals. One neighbour said Mrs Greve's husband had died a few years ago, adding: "You always saw a lot of children and young people at the house."

Last night another neighbour Kerri Fisher gave her reaction to the death:

The court was told grandson Greve lived with his grandmother - and was brought up "like her own child". Greve has told police how he returned home to find Solo standing above his grandmother in the kitchen.

Rhona Greve had been a full-time carer for her husband Malcolm as he battled lung disease emphysema.

Rhona had four children - three daughters and a son who died at a young age. She was being mourned by her 21 grandchildren.

Local councillor Susan Goddard says she was shocked by the news:
