A man and woman from Cardiff have been jailed for their involvement in a sham marriage plot.

Anselmo Danfa, 39, a Portuguese national from Guinea Bissau, had originally registered to marry a Gambian woman at Cardiff Register Office in November 2013 - despite already being married.

Sophie Jobarteh, 33, a Gambian woman living in Cardiff, assisted in the arrangement of the planned sham - although the wedding was later cancelled.

A Home Office investigation led to the arrests of Danfa and Jobarteh at their home addresses in the Welsh capital.

Both were found guilty by a unanimous verdict of conspiracy to secure the avoidance, postponement or revocation of immigration enforcement action at their trial in Cardiff Crown Court on February 20th this year.

Danfa was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court, in his absence, to 12 months in jail.

He failed to appear for sentencing at an earlier hearing on Friday in the same court and a bench warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Jobarteh was jailed for 12 months at a previous hearing on Friday for her part in the sham marriage plot.
