Campaigners are calling on the Welsh Government to oppose plans by the UK Government for all driving licences to feature the Union flag.

The Department for Transport says all new licences for drivers in England, Scotland and Wales will include the flag, a move it says will give them "a symbolic sign of their national identity".

Currently, only the European Union flag is present.

The Welsh petition, which has attracted 1,500 signatures so far, calls for licences to be kept in their current form or feature the Welsh flag instead.

Plaid Cymru'S Elfyn Llwyd, MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd, told the Daily Post he feared the UK Government's plan would create "dissent".

Arfon Plaid Cymru MP Hywel Williams said he was "astonished" at what he called a "petty proposal" by the Department for Transport.

The EU flag has been displayed on full driving licences since photocards were first introduced in July 1998.
