Only 40% of disabled people of working age in Wales are in work

The event is being attended by some of the nation's biggest employers

In Wales, only 40% of disabled people who are eligible to work are currently in employment.

According to the Department for Work and Pensions, who sourced the figure, that's worse than any other part of Britain.

For those looking for work they say it's employers' attitude that's stopping them getting onto the payroll.

Today in Cardiff there's an event trying to change that; called 'Disability Confident Conference'.

Fronted by Falklands veteran and Welsh businessman, it's designed to encourage employers to recruit more of the 225,000 disabled people of working age.

Talking to ITV News Mr Weston said:

Research by the Department for Work and Pensions found that disabled people:

  • Generally stay in the job for longer

  • Have a lower rate of absenteeism

They say that there's lots of funding and support from both the UK andWelsh Government to help employers make their workspace accessible:

Whilst there's a legal obligation for employers, the Minister hopes today's event will highlight the economic benefits for making workplaces across Wales more accessible.
