Local Hero finalist: Damion Buckingham
Thirty-year old Damion Buckingham has been nominated for being “the most caring man in his community”. He’s part of a generation that’s faced tragedy upon tragedy, with twenty of his friends dying from accidents, illnesses and addictions in the last decade or so. All of them were in their teens and twenties.
Damion set up a facebook page to keep their memories alive. As well as celebrating their lives, it also offered support for those going through bereavement – with Damion putting his grief to one side to help others.
Inspired by the reaction of the community, Damion took it upon himself to help a local homeless man. Along with his friends they provided the young man with a tent, food and clothes. Sadly he passed away this summer after battling cancer. But Damion was determined that he be remembered. With the help of a local stonemason he’s organised for a headstone to be put on the man’s grave for free.
Damion says he was “gobsmacked” to be nominated – “It’s just an honour”.
