Staff at a Bridgend prison got a surprise when they discovered a cat had managed to sneak behind bars and give birth to six kittens.

Workers at Parc Prison found the cat and her six kittens inside a prison van.

An animal centre was called to collect the family, and the kittens have now been named after detective icons; Jessica, Sherlock, Christie, Marple, Kojak, and Morse. The mother has also been named Agatha.

Centre manager at Cats Protection in Bridgend, Sue Dobbs, said: "It's the first time we've rescued a cat from inside the walls of a well-guarded prison.

"We don't know how the mother cat got in there - maybe inside the van."

The kittens will spend the next eight weeks at the cat rescue centre before being re-homed.
