Aberbargoed becomes home to UK's newest National Nature Reserve
When you think of nature reserves you probably think of beautiful coastline or wild sweeping countryside.
However, the home of the UK's newest National Nature Reserve (NNR) is in a much more urban setting.
Over the years the Aberbargoed Grasslands have developed into an area rich in different wild plants which have turned into the perfect home for wildlife including the endangered marsh fritillary butterfly.
The success of the Grasslands has lead to the Countryside Council for Wales to award NNR status to the area from today.
It's hoped that the reserve will play an even bigger role in the community with a classroom on site and also put Aberbargoed on the map as an attraction for those interested in nature.
To celebrate the the Grassland's recognition as a National Reserve local school children will be dressing as insects in a butterfly parade. The celebrations are well timed as this week is Wales Biodiversity Week.
