Strong winds and heavy rain batters Wales

After a week of exceptionally unsettled weather, another deep depression has brought heavy rain and strong winds across Wales.

Yellow warnings were issued for Sunday by the Met Office for rain and wind, but damage caused by sustained gales and very strong gusts have caused the most disruption. Gales in spring are unusual as is the northeasterly direction of the wind. With many trees now in leaf it may well be playing a part in the number of whole trees being blown in to roads and power cables.

Western Power Distribution reported that 5000 homes were without power, with Swansea, Cardiff and southeast Valleys areas being affected. SP Energy Networks who supply homes in North Wales didn't have reports of power outages but were prepared for more strong winds throughout Sunday.

Roads affected:

M4 at Pont Abraham has lanes closed due to a tree falling on the carriageway, speed restrictions have been imposed on other stretches of the motorway

A470 closed between Heads of the Valleys Road and A4059 - tree fall

A55 Britannia Bridge 30mph speed limit due to high winds

A4054 Pendwyallt Road near Coryton interchange M4 closed in both directions due to tree fall

A4118 Dyfatty Street in Swansea blocked by tree causing disruption in area

M48 Severn Crossing closed to high sided vehicles, speed limited to 40mph

Spray and standing water on roads have led to poor driving conditions and there is more rain to come. Currently there are no flood alerts or warnings on Wales' rivers but more heavy rain or showers could lead to localised flooding.

Strong winds are expected to continue into the early hours of Monday morning.
