The bodies of a man and woman and their three sons – aged 13, 11 and six – were found at the property at Oakdene Downs, Barconey in Ballyjamesduff on Monday morning.

Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’Driscoll said: “We're not looking for anybody else - we believe all the answers are within that house.

“The most likely scenario is that one person within that house may have caused the death of others.

“All the circumstances will be explored, that is the position.”

Nothing had happened prior to this grim discovery which gave rise to anybody, including gardaí, having suspicion that anything was untoward.

– Assistant Garda Commissioner John O’Driscoll

It is understood that the tragedy was discovered when the children failed to turn up for school and gardaí visited the house shortly before midday.

According to the assistant commissioner, there is no evidence that a gun was used.

“A number of objects that were found in the house are subject to technical examination," he added.

"But until that examination is complete, we are not in a position to say the precise cause of death."
