Northern Ireland were heroic in defeat, proving at least a match for the Welsh over 90 minutes, but alas were undone by an unfortunate Gareth McCauley own goal.

Meanwhile at home as in France, the fans who make up the Green and White Army were vocal and proud, lending their full-throated support to their team.

After the final whistle several high-profile fans paid tribute to both the squad and those who backed them throughout.

There were emotional scenes at the end of the match, as players remained on the pitch to applaud those in the terraces who had been so loyal and so vociferous regardless of the result.

The Welsh side thought they had gone ahead through Aaron Ramsey, but he was flagged for offside.

Northern Ireland have otherwise had the better of the first half.

However, Stuart Dallas will be disappointed to have picked up a yellow card which means that, should Northern Ireland progress, he would miss their next game.
