Devastated family of Michael Newberry speak out after sudden death of Cliftonville star
The big brother of footballer Michael Newberry, who tragically died last week, has described the late Cliftonville defender as his "superstar".
Michael died suddenly on December 30, his 27th birthday.
Adrian Newberry said: "It was devastating when she [Mum] told us the news, my world just shattered there and then, it hit home when I had to go and see my little brother like that.
"It was the worst day of my life and I said to him, Michael, I just love you.
"I would give my life to have one more second with him."
Originally from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Michael was a popular figure in NI football having played underage with Cliftonville and Linfield before signing for the Reds.
The Northern Ireland Football League held a minute’s silence for Michael before the Cliftonville and Linfield matches on 30 December.
"It has brought us so much comfort and happiness and to know his name meant to much to everybody, he made an impact and left a legacy behind.
"I don't see him as my little brother now, I see him as a superstar, he's like Gazza or Shearer, he is my superstar 100%.
"For people to take time out it, it means the world to us," added Adrian.
Michael's father Michael senior said: "We've had tremendous support, and we'll always remember Michael with a smile on his face."
