Cliftonville defender Michael Newberry dies suddenly aged 27

Cliftonville have announced that their player Michael Newberry has died suddenly at the age of 27.

As a result, tonight's match against Dungannon Swifts at Solitude has been postponed.

In a social media post, Cliftonville wrote: "Our sincere condolences are extended to Michael’s family and friends, as well as the many team-mates he played alongside during his career, and supporters who will be shaken and saddened by this heartbreaking news at this most difficult of times."

Linfield have also cancelled their match scheduled for this evening as Newberry played for the club for more than three years.

A native of Newcastle, Michael Newberry played underage for his hometown club, before a stint at Icelandic side Víkingur Ólafsvík.

He then moved to Northern Ireland, first playing for Linfield for more than three years before joining Cliftonville last summer.

He also represented Northern Ireland's u21 side.

In a statement, the Northern Ireland Football League, said: "The NI Football League are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of Cliftonville player Michael Newberry.

"Everyone connected with the NI Football League pass on our heartfelt condolences to Michael’s family, friends and everyone connected with Cliftonville Football Club at this sad time."
