Guns haul ‘most significant find in NI in a decade’
A haul of hand guns, machine guns, machine pistols and an assault rifle has been described as ‘the most significant firearms find in Northern Ireland in a decade”.
The weapons were found in waterproof holdalls buried in the ground in a rural part of the Jerrettspass area, outside Newry, on Thursday afternoon.
The search was being carried out as part of a National Crime Agency investigation into organised crime, supported by the PSNI.
A total of 11 guns were found, some with magazines attached, and a quantity of ammunition was also recovered.
The search, which got underway at about 4pm, continued into the night with the assistance of PSNI search specialists and equipment.
David Cunningham, NCA Branch Commander, said: “This is a major success against those involved in serious and organised crime, which we undertook with the support of our partners in the Organised Crime Task Force.
“Our investigation continues - part of which will include a detailed forensic examination to identify those who have handled the weapons and to determine their previous use.”
Mr Cunningham added: “These types of automatic weapons are used by serious organised criminals to kill and cause serious harm and we are convinced that this seizure will prevent future loss of life.
“Working with PSNI and other partners during this operation has been key to this success and we will continue to bring all of our shared expertise to bear in bringing those involved to justice.”
DUP Newry and Armagh MLA William Irwin has welcomed the recovery of the weapons and said it showed “just how vital” the work of the NCA in Northern Ireland was.
“This operation has removed ‘killer capacity’ from organised crime in Northern Ireland and I wish the NCA more success in the days ahead as they confront the criminal underworld,” he said.
SDLP Assemblyman Justin McNulty also welcomed the find and added that those behind violent criminality must be brought before the courts.
“This is a quiet area - it is an area of decent, hardworking and law-abiding people,” he said.
“They are stunned that this weaponry has been found in their area and are, like me, glad it has been taken off our streets.”
