Linfield defend new kit after comparisons with UVF flag

Linfield FC have claimed that any similarities between a new jersey and a parmilitary flag are "totally coincidental".

The Irish premiership side has come under criticism in recent days after their new away kit for the 2020/21 season was revealed on Wednesday evening.

A number of posts across social media have drew comparisons between the shirt - which is predominantly purple and features an orange diagonal stripe - and a flag associated with the UVF, a paramilitary organisation.

Alliance deputy leader Stephen Farry has said a "rethink would be appropriate."

The North Down MP said: "The similarity to UVF colours is too striking. Many other colours and designs are available.

"Why leave any ambiguity and risk offence to so many?"

In a statement, the club said the design has been met with approval from supporters but that they can not ignore suggestions made by others.

"For the avoidance of all doubt, the design is of a football kit for a football club and any similarity / likeness / resemblance with any other design used by any other entity is totally coincidental and entirely unintentional."

The statement continues: "Any allegation or inference to the contrary is robustly and vigorously rejected by this club which prides itself on being inclusive, open to all and representative of all.

"Linfield FC is totally opposed to all forms of bigotry, prejudice, violence and discrimination. "
