Increase in NI domestic violence calls
A charity has warned of a further rise in the number of calls about domestic violence.
Nexus NI said last week saw a 13% rise in calls, on top of a 27% rise in the first week of April.
They said the number of visits to the domestic and sexual abuse website has doubled.
As the coronavirus lockdown continues, Nexus said there has been an increase in callers worried that if they leave home, they could get Covid-19.
“Our partner agencies and Housing Executive have been actively working with the helpline team to provide accommodation,” a spokesperson said.
“There are options available and we encourage anyone feeling unsafe in their home to please pick up the phone and call the helpline.
“Anyone in immediate danger should call 999 and press 55 on a mobile if they are unable to talk and the PSNI will still be there for you.”
