Mum of murdered journalist Lyra McKee dies
The family of murdered journalist Lyra McKee have confirmed her broken-hearted mother has died just ahead of the first anniversary of her shooting.
The 29-year-old writer and author was killed by the New IRA last April as she observed rioting in the Creggan estate in Londonderry.
On Tuesday, her mum Joan Lawrie died in hospital, peacefully and surrounded by her family.
Posting on social media, Lyra’s sister Nichola McKee-Corner said their mother was “now at peace with her beloved daughter”.
Ms Corner also said the death of her sister had a profound effect on her mum.
Ms McKee-Corner added that her heart was comforted knowing her mother and sister were together again and that she would love them forever.
Ms McKee had been her disabled mother’s main carer.
Another tweet from a relative said: “My wee mother-in-law, passed away last night of a broken heart. Unable to live without her baby Lyra.
“My wee mother-in-law whom I loved with all my heart, I will love you to beyond eternity. Mother and daughter rest in forever peace.”
The family's legal representative Niall Ó’Murchú has said the funeral and family home will remain strictly private.
A murder investigation has been launched into the death of Lyra McKee.
Paul McIntyre, 52, has been charged with murder, possessing a firearm and being a member of the IRA – he denies the charges.
