Martina Anderson to be announced as new Foyle MLA

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson is set to be announced as a new MLA for Foyle, UTV understands.

A party source says Ms Anderson's appointment will be confirmed on Saturday at a party convention in Londonderry.

It marks a return to the Assembly for the outgoing MEP. Ms Anderson served as an MLA for the constituency between 2007 and 2012.

Raymond McCartney, who served as an MLA for Foyle for 15 years, announced that he was stepping down on Thursday.

All three Northern Ireland MEPs who were elected to the European Parliament last May, will now sit in the Assembly chamber. Alliance's Naomi Long and DUP veteran Diane Dodds both now hold Executive roles.

Ms Anderson's role as an MEP will cease tonight when the United Kingdom leaves the European Union.
