Carrick sea wall collapses as Storm Brendan hits

Part of the sea wall has collapsed at the Belfast Road in Carrickfergus, Co Antrim as Storm Brendan hits the UK and Ireland.

Gales of up to 80mph will be possible in places, with weather warnings in place.

In Carrick, the Belfast Road is closed at its junctions with the Slowfield Road and Albert Road and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

A number of other coastal areas are also badly affected, including Seaview in Warrenpoint and the South Promenade in Newcastle, Co Down which are closed in both directions due to the adverse weather conditions.

In the Republic of Ireland, ESB Networks said around 48,000 homes and businesses were without power on Monday afternoon.

NIE said power had to be restored to 9,500 homes and businesses right across Northern Ireland.

They said work to restore a remaining 800 customers would continue into the evening.

A number of councils across Northern Ireland have closed public parks, open spaces, and play parks as a precaution.

Meanwhile, trampolines have been causing chaos, with a number of reports of them ending up in inconvenient places.

One had to be retrieved from railways tracks at Finaghy, while another was spotted in the middle of the M7 in Limerick.
