The family of an elderly patient at Altnagelvin Hospital have been deeply touched to learn of a young nurse who sang their grandmother’s favourite hymn at her bedside.

Nellie Barr’s grandson Jason posted the video online and it quickly struck an emotional chord with thousands of people.

“I just think it’s a testament to that nurse,” he said.

“She didn’t even know she was being videoed, but there she was singing to my grandmother and lifting her spirits.

“It just shows how caring the nurses can be and how loving they can be towards their patients.”

The reaction to the heart-warming rendition of Amazing Grace in a quiet corner of the hospital ward certainly came as a surprise to student nurse Brittany McArthur.

“I’m a bit overwhelmed with it all,” she told UTV.

“I’ve been singing actually since I was about three or four, probably since I could talk, but I think I might just stick to nursing.

“But if it helps along the way, I suppose I’ll sing here and there too.”

She may be a talented singer, but caring for people through nursing is a vocation Brittany has no intention of giving up.
