A mother has had to run to the aid of her son after hearing his cries of pain as he was shot in both legs in a paramilitary-style attack in Londonderry.

The gun attack happened in the Lisfannon Park area at about 7.15pm on Friday.

Police have described it as a “sickening and vicious attack” on the 25-year-old victim, who was shot a number of times in each leg.

PSNI Inspector Cummings said: “He was targeted in a residential area, during the early evening when children and families were going about their normal everyday lives.

“This is despicable and should not happen in a civilised society.”

He added: “What makes this incident all the more shocking is that the victim’s own mother heard his cries of pain and ran to his aid.”

It came as another man was also shot in the legs in a separate incident in west Belfast.

That gun attack happened in the Westrock Park area at about 8.30pm on Friday.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about either incident to contact them.
