Two men have appeared in court charged with the murder of Eddie Meenan, whose body was found in an alleyway in Londonderry, just yards from his home.

The 52-year-old father-of-nine was found dead in the Creggan Street area of Derry in the early hours of last Sunday.

He had sustained serious injuries to his head and body.

A number of arrests have been made as part of the murder investigation.

On Friday, two men were brought before a judge at Bishop Street Courthouse charged with murder.

Sean Rodgers, 31 and from the Little Diamond area, and 26-year-old Derek Cresswell, of no fixed abode, were both remanded in custody.

Relatives and friends of the victim shouted abuse inside the court.

Meanwhile, police have made a specific appeal for three people who were in the area around the time of the murder to come forwards.

PSNI Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell said: “I would like to speak to three people – two men and one woman – who I know were standing on the steps of a shop on Creggan Street at around 2.20am on Sunday 25 November.

“They were then given a lift from someone driving a dark-coloured, medium-sized car at around 2.30am.

“I would appeal to them to make contact with me as they may be able to provide some vital information.”

Police are still questioning two other men – aged 17 and 19 – who have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
