Thousands of people packed Belfast city centre on Saturday night for the annual Christmas lights switch-on.

Lord Mayor Deirdre Hargey welcomed all those who turned out and expressed her delight at seeing so many on the streets of the city – which has been struggling in the wake of the major Primark fire.

Traders have reported a big drop in footfall when they should be enjoying the pre-Christmas rush.

“To really see the heart of the city centre lit up again with people coming from right across the city, it’s amazing,” Ms Hargey said.

“Just as the city, when times get tough, Belfast people stand together.”
