A man has been stabbed and a woman punched during an attempted mugging in south Belfast.

The incident happened in the Haywood Avenue area of the Ormeau Road in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Police have reported that the couple were approached by two men wearing dark clothing and were asked for money and cigarettes - they had neither to give them.

The man was then stabbed in his upper leg and head and the woman was punched in the face.

Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

The two offenders made off empty handed and police say it is unclear which direction they headed in.

Police are appealing to anyone with information to call 101 quoting reference number 55 31/10/18.
