Wild stag shot dead in east Belfast

A wild stag has been shot dead by police in east Belfast due to 'a danger to motorists'.

The animal was running along the Gilnahirk road in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police say it was in "an extremely agitated and dangerous state" and narrowly missed a number of motorists.

There was an effort by police to contain the stag, but it was not possible.

The animals was humanely shot and died instantly.

Rutting season

Male stags in rutting season often attempt to fight off rivals in order to attract as many females as possible.

Stags can be aggressive and dangerous in this state.

Police say the animal posed as 'a real threat to members of the public'.
