Prime Minister Theresa May has insisted the Chequers plan represents the best deal for Northern Ireland.

She was speaking to UTV as the Conservative Party conference took place in Birmingham.

Ms May said the British Government’s plan is the only one on the table at the moment that can deliver a frictionless border after Brexit.

“Obviously we are working to get a good deal,” she said.

“The one plan on the table at the moment that delivers frictionless across borders and therefore would deal sustainably with that issue of no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland is the plan that’s been put forward by the British Government.

“We’re working hard on that plan.”

Theresa May said her Government talks regularly with representatives of the Irish Government over the border issue.

She went on: “We are all clear and Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has said this himself that the best way to ensure no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland is with the right deal, the right arrangement for the future relationship between the EU and the UK.

“The one plan on the table that delivers that is the plan put forward by the British Government, the Chequers plan.”
