Derry and Strabane Councillors have voted to rename the Brandywell Stadium after the late Derry City legend Ryan McBride, following his shock death in March last year.

The 27-year-old captain died suddenly at his home the day after leading the Candystripes to a 4-0 win over Drogheda United, sparking sadness across the football community.

On Thursday, council committee members voted in favour of renaming the stadium in Ryan’s honour.

The proposal had been subject to a public consultation and was met with resounding positive feedback.

Almost three quarters of respondents voted in favour of the proposal.

The decision will have to be ratified by full council.
