Cannabis plants and a large quantity of benzocaine, a chemical used to cut cocaine, have been seized during planned searches in north Belfast.

Police say the cannabis plants found in the Oldpark area of the city are worth around £18,000, while the benzocaine was enough to be mixed with cocaine and produce a haul worth around £6m.

Other drugs paraphernalia was also seized during the raids.

One man, aged 32, has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences related to the possession and supply of illegal drugs.

PSNI Detective Inspector Pete Mullan said: “Illegal drugs not only destroy individuals and communities, they directly fund the lifestyles of organised criminals.

“We are committed to tackling the issue of drugs and I would appeal to the public to speak to us if they have any concerns or information regarding drugs in their communities.”

He added: “I would ask anyone who is aware of any individual involved in the supply of drugs to contact their local police on 101.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
