Hundreds protest against far-right movement in Belfast

Several hundred people protesting against the far-right movement held a rally against a march happening in Belfast on Saturday.

Saturday’s counter-demonstration outnumbered the ‘UK Freedom March’, the purpose of which was to "highlight Brexit and injustice in the UK", according to the application made to the Parades Commission.

Organisers called on people to take part after a large rally supporting English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson attracted a large crowd in the city earlier this month.

Speakers from both sides addressed the two crowds separated by police.

A number of smoke bombs were used during the event.

Police say the parade and protest passed off with a few incidents of minor disorder amid a “proportionate policing operation” put in place to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Chief Inspector Kelly Moore said: “An Evidence Gathering Team was on duty and police will now review all evidence gathered by them and if any offences or breaches of the Parades Commission determinations are detected, a police investigation will be carried out.”
