A young woman has been killed after being hit by a suspected stolen car on the Ballysillan Road in north Belfast on Thursday morning.

The pedestrian is believed to be a local woman.

Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly said the community had been left shocked by the second tragedy to occur in north Belfast in just over 12 hours.

On Wednesday night, a murder investigation was launched after the discovery of a man’s body.

Speaking about the latest incident, Mr Kelly added: “I want to extend my condolences to the family and friends of the woman killed, and ask anyone who may have been in the vicinity at the time of the incident to come forward with that information.”

Police say one man was arrested at the scene of the crash and the road remains closed.

Police Ombudsman investigators are also at the scene.

DUP councillor Dale Pankhurst also expressed shock at the news.

Posting on Twitter, he said: “Sickened to the pit of my stomach that a local woman has been killed by suspected joyriders.”
