Belfast boxer Carl Frampton is facing legal action from his former promoters, Cyclone Promotions.

A settlement between the two parties could not be reached over contractual matters.

Together they went right to the top, now Frampton and Cyclone could come up against each other in court.

Legal proceedings were lodged against Frampton by his former promotional team and Blain McGuigan at the High Court in London.

Blain is the eldest son of former world champion Barry McGuigan and is an active director with Cyclone, as is Barry's wife Sandra, and other sons Shane and Jake.

Barry himself resigned as a director of the company in 2015. Frampton then followed suit this year after a disastrous summer.

He missed the weight for his fight with Andres Gutierrez in July, which was eventually cancelled - then came the split.

Frampton had been managed by Barry McGuigan since turning pro in 2009 and during that time had become a two weight world champion.

But in August he ended the relationship stating he was confident it was the right time to move forward and take his career into his own hands.

Since then, Frampton has teamed up with MTK Global and Frank Warren.

Frampton's legal representatives at Finucane Toner have said: "Mr Frampton is deeply disappointed that Cyclone Promotions have decided to initiate legal action against him.

"However, he will not only defend this action rigorously, but can confirm he will be counter-claiming on a number of grounds.

"Mr Frampton is confident that this process will vindicate his position and reputation, and looks forward to engaging fully in this process to present all aspects of this claim before the court."

Then Cyclone Promotions released this statement: "For some weeks now, Cyclone Promotions has been attempting to mediate a settlement with Carl Frampton and his representatives.

"This mediation was ended by Carl Frampton's solicitors when a settlement could not be reached.

"The company therefore lodged a claim at the High Court against Carl Frampton relating to his breach of the promotional contract entered into with Cyclone Promotions.

"Cyclone Promotions is merely seeking a fair and equitable resolution to this contract dispute with Carl Frampton."

Frampton made a winning comeback to the ring just over a week ago in Belfast. On Monday, he and his wife Christine left Northern Ireland for Kenya as part of a charity trip.
