Thousands running in Belfast City Marathon
Up to 17,500 people are expected to take part in the Belfast City Marathon on Monday.
The event, now in its 36th year, attracts participants from all walks of life as well as thousands of spectators enjoying the bank holiday.
Starting at 9am at City Hall and the race finishes at Ormeau Park, with the route stretching right across the city - from Sydenham to the Falls Road.
Some traffic disruption is expected through the morning but police have said “every attempt will be made to ensure that this is kept to a minimum”.
They said they will releasing updates via social media.
“With many people benefiting from some time off this coming Mayday long weekend, we are expecting an increase in the numbers of people travelling to the city to shop, visit attractions, enjoy the many bars and restaurants, watch sporting events or even participate in the Belfast City Marathon on Monday,” a statement said.
“Our message is to invite residents and visitors to come and enjoy all that Belfast has to offer but to do so safely.”
Translink has also warned that its Metro services could be subject to delays between 6am and 5pm due to the marathon, with some diversionary route changes.
“Please leave additional time for your journey, or make alternative arrangements during periods of disruption,” a spokesperson said.
Last year’s marathon was won by Kenyan Joel Kositany in a time of 2:17:38.
