Glenavon Football Club has expressed sadness at the loss of former player Tony Scappaticci, after he was found dead at the age of 48.

The Banbridge-born now retired defender played for the Lurgan club for years, and also served at Newry City and Bangor FC for a time.

Among his accolades was winning the Irish Cup with Glenavon in 1992.

Glenavon chairman Adrian Teer paid tribute to the popular player, who was found dead in his Banbridge home, and added that he had been suffering ill health.

“He was a classy left back. Strong in the air and good in the tackle," he said.

"He had the attributes to have played cross-channel football had he applied himself.

“It’s a very sad day. He was a popular character and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
