DUP ‘ready for another election if talks fail’ - Donaldson
The DUP is prepared for another election if an agreement cannot be reached in the talks process, Sir Jeffrey Donaldson has said.
The MP said the possibility of a snap poll cannot be ruled out, but added that he thinks it’s more likely Northern Ireland could be heading towards direct rule.
"The reality is an election won't resolve any of the issues,” said Mr Donaldson.
"They can only be resolved through negotiation and if Sinn Féin aren't prepared to negotiate, then most people will conclude 'what is the point in having another election?'
"I think the more likely outcome is direct rule, but clearly that's a decision for the Government."
Meanwhile Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams has said the Irish Government must make clear to the UK Government that direct rule is not an option if the talks fail.
Speaking at an Easter Rising commemoration in Co Tyrone over the weekend, he added: "Sinn Féin wants a deal.
"But if there is no deal then there has to be an election.
"The role and responsibility of the Irish Government must be to assert that an election is the only legal course open to the British Government, if the current talks fail to elect an Executive."
The talks, which were paused for the Easter break, are expected to resume on Wednesday.
