Derry City are set to play their first game since the tragic loss of their captain Ryan McBride nearly two weeks ago.

In what is bound to be an emotional occasion, the side will take on Bray Wanderers at Maginn Park on Friday evening.

The shock loss of their 27-year-old captain, who died suddenly at his home the day after leading the Candystripes to a 4-0 win over Drogheda United, sparked sadness across the football community.

The Football Association of Ireland and the Irish Football Association both paid tribute to Ryan McBride as his family, teammates and fans mourned his passing.

He was laid to rest last Thursday, following a funeral service attended by hundreds of mourners who heard him remembered as an inspirational leader and role model.

Team manager Kenny Shiels fought back tears as he read a poem which noted: “In your absence, we will still play the game.

"But in your absence, it won’t be the same.”
