All 90 MLAs elected to NI Assembly
Vote counters have worked into the night and completed the results of the Northern Ireland Assembly election in the early hours of Saturday, with 90s MLAs returned.
The number of seats has been reduced from 108, making life difficult for the parties and claiming some high-profile casualties.
The DUP remains the largest party in Northern Ireland with 28 elected MLAs, but that is down from 38 in the last administration and only one more than Sinn Féin who polled particularly strongly.
The SDLP continued to hold 12 seats, with their biggest loss coming in West Belfast where party stalwart Alex Attwood lost out.
The UUP had just 10 MLAs returned, down from 16 last time round.
They endured big losses in the form of the likes of party stalwart Danny Kennedy, Jo-Anne Dobson, and Sandra Overend – prompting Mike Nesbitt’s resignation as leader.
The Alliance Party took eight seats – the same number as they had in the last administration and representing a good result for the party with the available seats having been reduced.
The Green Party will also be happy to still have two MLAs elected.
TUV leader Jim Allister was also returned to the Assembly and, while People Before Profit leader Eamonn McCann was unable to hold onto his seat in Foyle, party colleague Gerry Carroll was again elected in West Belfast.
Just one Independent MLA was elected – former Justice Minister Claire Sugden in East Londonderry.
