Sinn Féin to name successor to Martin McGuinness

Conor Murphy and Michelle O'Neill are considered frontrunners to take over from Martin McGuinness.

Sinn Féin is expected to name the successor to Martin McGuinness later on Monday.

Health Minister Michelle O'Neill and MLA Conor Murphy have been widely tipped as the leading candidates to take over the role.

They would become the head of the party's team at Stormont and would likely assume the role of deputy First Minister in the next Assembly.

However, with the DUP and Sinn Féin currently at loggerheads over a host of issues, their first task may be to spearhead talks aimed at forming a new power-sharing Executive at Stormont.

Martin McGuinness stepped down as deputy First Minister amid mounting criticism of the DUP's handling of the RHI scheme controversy.

Last week, he said he would not stand in the upcoming election for health reasons, bringing to an end his political career at Stormont.
