A viable bomb has been found at the centre of a security alert in Dungannon, Co Tyrone.

The Fairmount Park area was cordoned off on Wednesday morning and a number of homes evacuated.

Army bomb experts attended the scene and made the device safe before taking it away for further examination.

With the alert now ended, residents have been able to return to their homes.

Police are appealing for information.

PSNI Inspector Robert McGowan said: “I would like to thank residents and the local business community for their patience during this operation.

“I would also appeal to anyone who knows anything about this incident, or anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area, to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.

“Alternatively, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555111.”
