Sinn Féin’s Ruane will not stand in next NI election
Sinn Féin MLA Caitríona Ruane has said she will not be standing in the next Northern Ireland Assembly election.
Ms Ruane has represented the South Down constituency for the last 14 years and, during that time, has served as an Education Minister and as a Principal Deputy Speaker.
“I have now decided not to put my name forward for selection for the next Assembly election,” she confirmed, in a statement on Sunday evening.
An election has not yet been called, but looks increasingly likely.
Sinn Féin have until 5pm on Monday to nominate a replacement for Martin McGuinness as deputy First Minister following his recent resignation.
However, they continue to insist they will not do so and want Northern Ireland to go to the polls.
Adding that her party has continued to grow in her constituency, Ms Ruane said: “I have no doubt that local activists will choose a strong team to go before the electorate and they will have my full and enthusiastic support in any upcoming election, in which I will acting as an election agent.
“This will be a hugely important election and it is vital that people have the opportunity to call time on the DUP’s arrogance and put respect and equality at the heart of the political institutions.”
Pointing to issues including the scrapping of the eleven plus for primary school pupils, and the promotion of equality for women, Irish language speakers, and the LGBT community, Ms Ruane said it had been an honour and a privilege to serve as an MLA.
She added her thanks to constituents, party colleagues and family for their support over the years.
