Gunmen fire shot at van outside hotel in Belleek

Police are investigating a shooting incident in Belleek, Co Fermanagh.

Three gunmen wearing balaclavas arrived at a hotel in Main Street on Tuesday morning and fired one shot into the van of a contractor working there.

Chief Inspector Graham Dodds said: “No-one sustained any injuries but all involved are understandably shaken by today’s events.”

The shooting happened shortly before 9.30am and police said the men made off in the direction of the Irish border.

The PSNI is now working closely with An Garda Síochana to trace their movements.

Chief Inspector Graham Dodds added: “I would appeal to anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the area or anyone who has any information about this incident to contact Police at Enniskillen on the non-emergency 101 number, quoting reference number 272 02/07/16.”

Ulster Unionist Fermanagh & South Tyrone MP Tom Elliott has condemned the shooting and appealed for anyone with information to contact police.

“Belleek is a quiet Fermanagh border village and this incident will have come as a complete shock to the local community. It is a reminder that we are still plagued by those who are intent on murder, attempted murder and disruption, and of dark days which we all want to put behind us,” he said.

Local SDLP Councillor John Coyle said people in the area are “shocked and frightened” by what has happened.

“The fact that people are still accessing firearms to use them for violence is totally unacceptable in our society and I would appeal for anyone with information to come forward to PSNI,” he commented.
