Thousands of spectators at Somme re-enactment
Thousands of people turned out to watch a dramatic re-enactment of the Battle of the Somme in north Belfast on Saturday – as part of a day of centenary commemorations.
Sounds of replica canon resounded around Woodvale Park as men in replica World War One uniforms acted as troops going over the top of the trenches in the Battle.
The scene was being filmed for part of a unique movie about the Somme – which has been in the making for several years.
Those behind the film say they hope it will be ready in time for the Cannes Film Festival next year.
David Hagan, Unionist Centenary Committee chairman said they wanted the re-enactment to show the “gruesome” reality of the battle.
Earlier in the day around 15,000 people took part in a Somme centenary parade through Belfast city centre.
A minute’s silence was held at the Cenotaph at Belfast City Hall during a wreath-laying ceremony.
