NI fan dies during Euro 2016 game in Lyon

The man sadly passed away in the stadium in Lyon during the game.

A Northern Ireland fan has died while watching his team play Ukraine in Lyon, police have confirmed.

It is understood the man, who is in his 60s, collapsed in the upper part of the stadium.

He was treated by paramedics at the scene, but they were unable to revive him.

The PSNI said the news had been confirmed by French police.

Superintendent Nigel Goddard said: "Our thoughts are tragically with a second family this week mourning the devastating loss of their loved one.“It is extremely sad that this is the second death of a Northern Ireland fan in France during the Euro 2016 games.

“We have been liaising with French authorities and local PSNI officers have been in touch with the man's family in Belfast.”

Fans were already mourning the loss of Ballymena man Darren Rodgers.

The 24-year-old, who was in France to support the Northern Ireland team, died in a fall in Nice.

A minute's applause was held in his honour at the 24th minute of Thursday evening's game.
