Twelve men have been arrested following an unnotified dissident republican parade in Lurgan.

They have been detained under the Public Processions Act and associated offences following the event in the Kilwilkie area on Saturday.

Masked men took part in the parade, which was organised by Republican Sinn Féin, who unveiled a memorial garden in the town as part of their Easter Rising commemorations.

Police were present at the time and a PSNI spokesperson said the arrests were as a result of the subsequent policing operation and concurrent investigation.

It is understood a number of the detained men are from the Republic of Ireland.

DUP Upper Bann MLA Carla Lockhart MLA said she welcomed the arrests.

“I condemn those who have involved themselves in such activity,” she said.

“North Lurgan has and is moving on and the harsh reality for these people is that they are in the minority.

“People do not want this on their streets. I call on the community to pass on information to the PSNI.

“I welcome the police arrests for this illegal activity and look forward to convictions.”
